Where the numbers come from

The figures on this site are the Consumer Price Index food item indexes, published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as part of the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U). The source is named here as the fetch manifest names it: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Price Index (CPI-U, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted), food item indexes. The manifest lists the endpoints https://download.bls.gov/pub/time.series/cu/cu.series and https://api.bls.gov/publicAPI/v2/timeseries/data/.

What these figures are not

These are national price indexes, not prices at any particular store.

An index is a price level relative to a fixed base period, not a price in dollars and not a shelf price in your town. Because the base is arbitrary, the useful reading is the change in an index over time, not the comparison of one index with another.

Earlier versions of this site published material that was not drawn from any real source. It was removed and replaced with this data.
